the first national government alert test will be conducted this Thursday
afternoon at 2:18 Eastern time. this means that all capable cell phones
will receive this test if they are turned on and connected to a cell
tower. You can't opt out of these alerts and they go off even if your
phone is on silent from what I read. this would be crazy if you're in a
crowded public place and everyone's cell phone goes off at the same
time. I've been in Walmart when Amber alerts would go off and it can get
loud. They say this is going to be a different sound, so I'm curious to
see what it's going to sound like. Whatever it is I'm sure it will be
attention getting.

I cjust went to the web sight for Government alerts and there was a test last year, but nothing said about an upcoming test.

Could you please provide the source?

And attention getting is exactly what it is supposed to be.
They did this here in Canada a couple of month ago, but in two stages. I think Ontario Quebec and the maritime provinces were first and then a couple of days later it was in the prairie and western provinces and the northern territories.
I already forgot exactly what it sounded like, but it was some sort of loud beeping.

If you've heard the Alert Ready tone on your TV and Radio, it sounded like that. Although some phone carriers here in Canada didn't transmit the alert.

If you've heard the Alert Ready tone on your TV and Radio, it sounded
like that. Although some phone carriers here in Canada didn't transmit
the alert.

And attention getting is exactly what it is supposed to be.
They did this here in Canada a couple of month ago, but in two
stages. I think Ontario Quebec and the maritime provinces were first
and then a couple of days later it was in the prairie and western
provinces and the northern territories.
I already forgot exactly what it sounded like, but it was some sort of loud beeping.

the first national government alert test will be conducted this
Thursday afternoon at 2:18 Eastern time. this means that all capable
cell phones will receive this test if they are turned on and
connected to a cell tower. You can't opt out of these alerts and they
go off even if your phone is on silent from what I read. this would
be crazy if you're in a crowded public place and everyone's cell
phone goes off at the same time. I've been in Walmart when Amber
alerts would go off and it can get loud. They say this is going to be
a different sound, so I'm curious to see what it's going to sound
like. Whatever it is I'm sure it will be attention getting.

That would explain why you get Amber Alerts, if you listen from something online from around the world and it contains information important to the area where the stream is coming from then that can't be helped.
I am originally from Germany but moved to Canada almost 30 years ago. Sometimes I still enjoy listening to german radio stations on my Sonos system and of course they include advertising for whatever business might advertise on whatever local or regional channel I am listening to. Of course whatever special some german pizza shop has is of little relevance to me here in Canada, but that's just the way it is and let's not forget that before the internet and being able to listen to streams from all over the world me listening to a german radio station in Canada wasn't even remotely possible.
Also, just out of curiocity, what is all that jibberish after your message (see the text of your message below).

Regards,
Sieghard

Absolutely right! In fact I find the local advertisements very nostalgic. It’s almost déjà vu!
The local advertisements make me feel like I am back there again :-)

Wow! 30 minutes! What does that mean? Is it going to make our phones go
off several times during that 30 minutes or will the test be sent out to
all carriers over a 30 minute time period?

Wow! 30 minutes! What does that mean? Is it going to make our phones go
off several times during that 30 minutes or will the test be sent out to
all carriers over a 30 minute time period?

This test has been pushed back to October 3, 2018. Same time now. 2:18 PM

You have to also remember that they have never tested this yet. So there may be a function that they're not quite aware of yet that may make the tone ring for 30 minutes. We don't know what it's going to do and what that 30 minutes actually means. Should just be ready folks it's all I can say. I don't know how to help anyone with this.
