Braille screen input. Is it just me, or really unreliable, indeed?

Hello All,
Is braille screen input in IOS9.02 really temporary, or am I missing something here? One day it feels like the braille sense, the other, its as if the screen wasn't working, but it is working.

I have no trouble with it. What, specifically, is not working when you have trouble with it?

"i have noticed this for quite some time as I either use the keyboard or mBraille. However, some days the touch of the screen is extremely unreliable and some days it is like pushing on an old typewriter. Today it is junk. Every app or email on the keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush. I just do not get it, but I keep plugging away with it since I love the phone. By the way, This is not limited to 9.02. I thought 9.02 was better until today. So I'll keep plugging along. [smiley)

Can you explain more? I've been using this feature for over a year, ever since iOS8.0, and it has really been one of the biggest game-changers in iOS that I can remember. My only problem is how, sometimes, a space turns into a dot 4 if I swipe wrong--I wish I could adjust the sensitivity of that gesture like I can in mBraille. Aside from that, I've never had any major problems, especially now in 9.x. Is there anything I could watch for, or specific steps I could try, to reproduce the problems you all are having?

Oh I love braille screen input! It has been a game changer for me. I only wish I could get it to follolw me around the rotor like I could in IOS 8. I thoguht Applevis said there was a way to set it to do that again, but I can’t find it. I wish there was a way you could select it as your keyboard all the time so that whenever you double tap on a text field, braille screen input would pop up. that kind of setting would be so neat!

My only problem is when I do the space it sometimes thinks for some reason I am swiping down and so selects another word and I have to go back up or backspace over the word and change it back. It doesn’t happen often, but it does sometimes.

You can do that. Just move BSI to the very first slot in your rotor, and it'll follow you again. There's no way to set it to be your default keyboard, at least not yet, but please do email Apple Accessibility and ask for that to become a setting.

I do not know how to tell you what is haplening, but when I bought my 6s I thought especially the keyboard mush and thus mistyping was fixed. However, today the screen seems overly tokchy. I am needing to retype about every third word. I even had my phone go into an app I was not working in once today. I have resorted to spelling evarything out on the third-party keyboard in mBraille. Do you still have tha command to change the touch on mBraille? I would appreciate the inbo because I loss it on transfer to 6s. Thanks. Actually, dictation is working the best right now. Go figure.

Every app or email on the keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush. I just do not get it, but I keep plugging away with it since I love the phone. By the way, This is not limited to 9.02. Hello All,
Is braille screen input in IOS9.02 really temporary, or am I missing something here? One day it feels like the braille sense, the other, its as if the screen wasn't working, but it is working.

Hello Alex,
I go somewhere like Safari, turn the rotor, and I get into braille screen input. From time to time, as I said, works like a charm. But at others, it doesn't recognise the keys at all, or says not recognised. If I turn the rotor, touch screen input works, instantly.

If this is specifically in Safari, that might be because the letter you type isn't a navigation command. Typing H will move by headings, and you'd swipe down or up to then move by heading. L is links, or I is images, you get the idea. Anything that doesn't map to something by which you can move will be unrecognized. If your focus is in a text field and a keyboard is displayed on the screen, BSI will type text into that field and won't navigate, otherwise it will.

Just go into braille input. If it works, awesome. But in my case, unfortunately, I can't rely on it. Is there a setting I should change?

Can you explain more? I've been using this feature for over a year, ever since iOS8.0, and it has really been one of the biggest game-changers in iOS that I can remember. My only problem is how, sometimes, a space turns into a dot 4 if I swipe wrong--I wish I could adjust the sensitivity of that gesture like I can in mBraille. Aside from that, I've never had any major problems, especially now in 9.x. Is there anything I could watch for, or specific steps I could try, to reproduce the problems you all are having?

I thought 9.02 was better until today. So I'll keep plugging along. [smiley)

Hello All,
Is braille screen input in IOS9.02 really temporary, or am I missing something here? One day it feels like the braille sense, the other, its as if the screen wasn't working, but it is working.

I'm still not following. What does it do/not do that makes it unreliable? Are there certain apps or situations where it consistently fails, and others where it works?

Hello Alex,
Just go into braille input.

RAJMUND, it's well documented that both keyboards and Braille displays are doing very weird things right now. sometimes they work, and sometimes they do not! Apple don't seem to have got to the bottom of it, so we just have to _ work around this until they do smiley

External keyboards and displays are indeed going a bit nuts in the 9.0.x releases. I've not heard of the onscreen keyboard, braille or otherwise, doing anything odd, though, and that's what I'm confused about.

As to Mbraille, it used to be:
.debug s [number]
where number is 18 to some maximum, maybe 40? Either way, the lower the number, the shorter the flick to get a space. I normally liked 19 or 20 personally.

Anytime input is needed like email, messages, Safari, and today I must have just barely touched the screen and it put me in a folder I was not trying to go into. Yesterday and since I got my 6s, everything on tha screen took a little pressure to make workdd It is just as if the screen got sloppy and won't reae all touches or parts of touches. You can see this on this mail and I used mBraille which has been working flawlessly until today. I have even reset the phone and done a hard reboot to no avail. Just something to put up with.

"i have noticed this for quite some time as I either use the keyboard or mBraille. However, some days the touch of the screen is extremely unreliable and some days it is like pushing on an old typewriter. Today it is junk. Every app or email on the keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush. I just do not get it, but I keep plugging away with it since I love the phone. By the way, This is not limited to 9.02. I thought 9.02 was better until today. So I'll keep plugging along. [smiley)

Hello All,
Is braille screen input in IOS9.02 really temporary, or am I missing something here? One day it feels like the braille sense, the other, its as if the screen wasn't working, but it is working.

You said the 6S; have you contacted Apple? You have 30 days of full support after time of delivery, and if your screen is doing weird things, I'd absolutely contact them. Braille is working perfectly here, and I've not heard of others having these problems that you and Raymond are describing. If it were me, I'd give Apple's primary support line a call (1 800 My Apple) and see what they can do, and/or head to a local Apple Store if you have one near by.

I'm still not following. What does it do/not do that makes it unreliable? Are there certain apps or situations where it consistently fails, and others where it works?

Hello Alex,
Just go into braille input. If it works, awesome. But in my case, unfortunately, I can't rely on it. Is there a setting I should change?

I just want to let others know that MBraille at times isn't much better. I know it's a 3rd party app, but after attempting to word process for over 1/2 hour that I give up and pair my Apex with the phone. I'm toying with purchasing the Smart Beetle for portability and not to deal with on screen braille keyboards. I have written to the developer about all the problems with the app and it appears that his hands are tied because it's iOS related. He did mention that those who are running 9.0... are having a better experience in using the app, but for various reasons I'm not upgrading as of yet. Thanks for listening and I truly hope one day us braille users will have a much better experience in the iOS environment.

Best,
Eileen

Well if you do get the Smart Beatle, you will have to upgrade to iOS 9 for native support. Otherwise, you will have to put it in emulation mode and choose BrailleSense.

Hello,
I wanted to type a new address, though. And the same field worked 10 minutes before.

Hello Alex,
I go somewhere like Safari, turn the rotor, and I get into braille screen input. From time to time, as I said, works like a charm. But at others, it doesn't recognise the keys at all, or says not recognised. If I turn the rotor, touch screen input works, instantly.

Hello,
I like that suggestion, braille as a keyboard type. To be fair, I thought it would be available, already. As for the complaint, I have it set to the rotor, I can help, but I'm not the best to ask for directions, yet. BASICALLY, you need to go into settings, general, accessibility, voice over, 3 finger flick up, rotor, double tap on braille input, and it should be added.

Oh I love braille screen input! It has been a game changer for me. I only wish I could get it to follolw me around the rotor like I could in IOS 8. I thoguht Applevis said there was a way to set it to do that again, but I can't find it.
It doesn't happen often, but it does sometimes.

Hello,
TO be fair, I thought that braille would be available as the keyboard option, already. As for the second, its possible, I'll tell you how, but I'm not the best to ask for this, not yet, anyway. BUT its basically: Settings, accessibility, voice over, 3 finger flick up, rotor, find braille screen input, and double tap. It should now be added.

"i have noticed this for quite some time as I either use the keyboard or mBraille. However, some days the touch of the screen is extremely unreliable and some days it is like pushing on an old typewriter. Today it is junk. Every app or email on the keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush..

Six dot is default on iPhones and iPods; eight dot is only for iPads. I'm not sure if it's for iPhone 6Plus units or not, but I'm thinking not.

Explore mode lets you move one or more fingers around the screen and hear what dots you touch. Just put one or more fingers down, leave them for a couple seconds, and there you go. Lift them all to leave this mode.

Calibration is something you generally don't need to worry about, but if you want to try it, just hit dots 4 5 6, then 1 2 3, right in a row. This seemed to help more in iOS8's early days, but I haven't had to do it in a very long time.

Works reliably well for me with iOS 9. To calibrate the dots on iPhone and iPod, Braille dots 4-5-6 quickly followed by dots 1-2-3. On iPad, Braille dots 1-2-3-4-5-6 twice in rapid succession. Exploration mode allows you to locate the dots without inputting any text.
Post by Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. For some reason the screen input mode keeps changing to six dot. Also how do you calibrate? How does explore mode work?
Thanks so much.

"i have noticed this for quite some time as I either use the keyboard or mBraille. However, some days the touch of the screen is extremely unreliable and some days it is like pushing on an old typewriter. Today it is junk. Every app or email on the keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush..

Hello,
First of all, sorry for the other reply, it was supposed to go elsewhere. I think mine does default into screen away mode sometimes, and that could explain the things. Can you please give more info about screen input, please?? Like, how the keys are?

Six dot is default on iPhones and iPods; eight dot is only for
iPads. I'm not sure if it's for iPhone 6Plus units or not, but
I'm thinking not.

Explore mode lets you move one or more fingers around the screen
and hear what dots you touch. Just put one or more fingers down,
leave them for a couple seconds, and there you go. Lift them all
to leave this mode.

Calibration is something you generally don't need to worry about,
but if you want to try it, just hit dots 4 5 6, then 1 2 3, right
in a row. This seemed to help more in iOS8's early days, but I
haven't had to do it in a very long time.

Works reliably well for me with iOS 9. To calibrate the dots on
iPhone and iPod, Braille dots 4-5-6 quickly followed by dots
1-2-3. On iPad, Braille dots 1-2-3-4-5-6 twice in rapid
succession. Exploration mode allows you to locate the dots
without inputting any text.

Hello everyone. For some reason the screen input mode keeps
changing to six dot. Also how do you calibrate? How does explore
mode work?
Thanks so much.

Hello everybody. How do you enter special characters like the
space bar, the delete and enter keys?

"i have noticed this for quite some time as I either use the
keyboard or mBraille. However, some days the touch of the screen
is extremely unreliable and some days it is like pushing on an
old typewriter. Today it is junk. Every app or email on the
keyboard or even in mBraille is like typing on mush.. I just do
not get it, but I keep plugging away with it since I love the
phone. By the way, This is not limited to 9.02. I thought 9.02
was better until today. So I'll keep plugging along. [smiley)
