So, I decided to add another iphone to my collection, the Iphone XR, so
I have an XR, an Iphone 8 and an Iphone SE. It's a nice phone, the
Apple store only had one case for it which was an Otterbox.
Unfortunately the Mophie juice pack is not available for this phone, at
least not yet. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get used to not
having a home button but it wasn't too bad, basically a short swipe up
from the bottom takes you home and a longer swipe opens the app
switcher. The vibrations are helpful but once you do it a few times,
you learn how far you must swipe up for each function. Battery life
seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the way
down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my collection.

Wow you guys are the envi! I sure wish I could get somehow sponsors for my “Ciberaprendiendo” podcast so I can feature the latest and greatest! Any tips? I’m working like a donkey and don’t get paid over there, thus at least I’d like to get worthwhile pocasts done, hoping I can get sponsors.

yes that.s true; I mean thinking now with a cold head, if my SE is working great (I had since May) what.s the use of having so many toys? worse if it.s with money one has? if these were loaned t record podcast of and you.d have to give them back, that.s understanable. If anyone of you guys someday can.t find a home for your old phones or phones that you hardly use....

I would love an XR, I could afford one but I really just don't see the need at this point and I never found much use for having more than one cell phone. When I bought my current 6S Plus I first kept my 5S and thought I would use it at home, for Audible and all that. I quickly noticed I just never did so I sold it.

I also got an XR to go with my iPhone 7 Plus, which just got a nice new battery, thank you Apple for the rather inexpensive battery replacement program.

I retired in old iPad mini too, which I used for lots of book reading. So the 7+ is now taking over for that phone. I only have one working phone. That is just one phone line. But I think I will be set for several years to come with these phones and their big batteries.

With my XR, I bumped my SE to my business cell since my trusty 5S was giving me more and more trouble. Slightly annoying that the SE's a 64 GB device since it's got nothing on it now, but oh well. Slowness aside on the 5S which is to be expected for such an old device, it started to act all weird on me. VO wasn't reading the phone numbers and often, it would automatically call people.
The 5S has a broken volume up button, a touch ID that doesn't work and a rear camera that's also broken. My wife changed the battery on it over the summer so as a super simple internet device, it can still work. She's going to buy the replacement camera module ($12 or so) and try to fix it. We've got nothing to lose. It's already broken.
We'll probably use it as a security camera or something. She's also got designs on taking it out with her to rack up more shoppkick and iBotta points by piggybacking off of her cell's personal hotspot. We're going to use that sucker for something until the wheels fall off.

I would love an XR, I could afford one but I really just don't see the need at this point and I never found much use for having more than one cell phone. When I bought my current 6S Plus I first kept my 5S and thought I would use it at home, for Audible and all that. I quickly noticed I just never did so I sold it.

So, I decided to add another iphone to my collection, the Iphone XR, so I have an XR, an Iphone 8 and an Iphone SE. It's a nice phone, the Apple store only had one case for it which was an Otterbox.
Unfortunately the Mophie juice pack is not available for this phone, at least not yet. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get used to not having a home button but it wasn't too bad, basically a short swipe up from the bottom takes you home and a longer swipe opens the app switcher. The vibrations are helpful but once you do it a few times, you learn how far you must swipe up for each function. Battery life seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the way down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my collection.

I'm actually surprised at how fast the iphone se is, for every day
tasks, it's not much slower than the XR or 8, definitely faster than
the 5S. The only thing I have noticed is that the cell reception is not
quite as good in some areas as with the 8 and XR, the SE will have less
bars in some areas, it's a great little phone, I was kind of sorry to
see it discontinued even though the technology in it was starting to
show its age.
Post by Cristobal Muñoz
With my XR, I bumped my SE to my business cell since my trusty 5S was
giving me more and more trouble. Slightly annoying that the SE's a 64
GB device since it's got nothing on it now, but oh well. Slowness aside
on the 5S which is to be expected for such an old device, it started to
act all weird on me. VO wasn't reading the phone numbers and often, it
would automatically call people.
The 5S has a broken volume up button, a touch ID that doesn't work and
a rear camera that's also broken. My wife changed the battery on it
over the summer so as a super simple internet device, it can still
work. She's going to buy the replacement camera module ($12 or so) and
try to fix it. We've got nothing to lose. It's already broken.
We'll probably use it as a security camera or something. She's also got
designs on taking it out with her to rack up more shoppkick and iBotta
points by piggybacking off of her cell's personal hotspot. We're going
to use that sucker for something until the wheels fall off.

I also got an XR to go with my iPhone 7 Plus, which just got a nice new
battery, thank you Apple for the rather inexpensive battery replacement
program.
I retired in old iPad mini too, which I used for lots of book reading.
So the 7+ is now taking over for that phone. I only have one working
phone. That is just one phone line. But I think I will be set for
several years to come with these phones and their big batteries.

Speedwise, the SE can still hold its own. I was getting more hanging and apps taking longer to open, switching between apps and things like that to where it was getting noticeable for me though. My business line I use for mainly receiving and making calls. All the other work related stuff like alerts, texting, calendar look ups, email, etc I do off of my main phone. Thus I decided to upgrade.
I'm still not a fan of Face ID and it's fairly frequent that I'm prompted for a passcode. I know the new gestures to replace the home button are there, but I simply don't find them as convenient or intuitive as just pressing the home button. Had they come out with a second generation SE, I would have snatched that sucker up in a second.
I know Apple talks up the new gestures a lot, but I find them to be bleh and at the very least a step back in user experience.
What I ended up doing too is to enable the assistive touch button and place it in my dock sort of as the fifth app there. Right between the second and third apps.
I then changed the behavior of the button so that one tap (VO double tap) would act as the home button and a double tap (VO triple tap) would be the control panel. With the long press and hold activating the menu for the rest of the assistive touch options.
This for me works since I can use the XR more comfortably as a one handed device and not bother with the swipe up gesture as the home button as I find just tapping the assistive touch icon much faster. That and I'm lazy too I guess. Makes unlocking the phone quicker for me as well.

Now that’s an idea about using Assistive touch as a virtual Home button! I never thought of that.

I'm actually surprised at how fast the iphone se is, for every day tasks, it's not much slower than the XR or 8, definitely faster than the 5S. The only thing I have noticed is that the cell reception is not quite as good in some areas as with the 8 and XR, the SE will have less bars in some areas, it's a great little phone, I was kind of sorry to see it discontinued even though the technology in it was starting to show its age.

With my XR, I bumped my SE to my business cell since my trusty 5S was
giving me more and more trouble. Slightly annoying that the SE's a 64
GB device since it's got nothing on it now, but oh well. Slowness
aside on the 5S which is to be expected for such an old device, it
started to act all weird on me. VO wasn't reading the phone numbers
and often, it would automatically call people.
She's also
got designs on taking it out with her to rack up more shoppkick and
iBotta points by piggybacking off of her cell's personal hotspot.
We're going to use that sucker for something until the wheels fall off.

I retired in old iPad mini too, which I used for lots of book reading.
So the 7+ is now taking over for that phone. I only have one working

So, I decided to add another iphone to my collection, the Iphone XR,
so I have an XR, an Iphone 8 and an Iphone SE. It's a nice phone, the
Apple store only had one case for it which was an Otterbox.
Unfortunately the Mophie juice pack is not available for this phone,
at least not yet. I wasn't sure how easy it would be to get used to
not having a home button but it wasn't too bad, basically a short
swipe up from the bottom takes you home and a longer swipe opens the
app switcher. The vibrations are helpful but once you do it a few
times, you learn how far you must swipe up for each function. Battery
life seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the
way down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for
my collection.

I find the gesture for the home button okay but accessing the app switcher is a pain. so can you use assistive touch to open it. I checked the web site but did not see any specific reference to the switcher. Is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Once you get into the assistive touch menu and turn it on, there are other functions you can do like reassign gestures. This is what I did as the VO double tap was for opening the menu. For me, I did the home button function and for the VO triple tap, control panel. You’ll se the option to make these changes in that same section. There are also other custom gestures you can make up and assign to different actions, but I haven’t played with that part.

I’ve also got reachability gesture turned on to bring down the screen.

I still use the regular gestures, but also having this option depending on what I’m doing or holding the phone makes it a more comfortable and easier user experience.

Tapping the assistive touch button to unlock the screen feels quicker for me as well.

I find the gesture for the home button okay but accessing the app switcher is a pain. so can you use assistive touch to open it. I checked the web site but did not see any specific reference to the switcher. Is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Original message:

With my XR, I bumped my SE to my business cell since my trusty 5S was

giving me more and more trouble. Slightly annoying that the SE's a 64

GB device since it's got nothing on it now, but oh well. Slowness

aside on the 5S which is to be expected for such an old device, it

started to act all weird on me. VO wasn't reading the phone numbers

and often, it would automatically call people.

She's also

got designs on taking it out with her to rack up more shoppkick and

iBotta points by piggybacking off of her cell's personal hotspot.

I find that when I am doing a lot of walking, the iphone SE is more
comfortable in the pocket. The XR is slightly bigger than the iphone 8,
it's ok in the pocket but you definitely know it's there a lot more. It
will be interesting to see how the Intel modem performs in the XR
compared to the Qualcom modem that is in the iphone 8, there wre
actuallly two different models of the previous iphone generations, one
used a Qualcom modem and the other used an Intel modem. Since Apple and
Qualcom had a falling out, all of the new iphones use Intel modems.

Actually the battery life on the iphone XR is amazing, I can get
several days out of it without having to charge, it's also a bit
lighter than my iphone 8, and once you get used to not having the home
button, it's not a big deal.

While I could probably get away without not charging my XR overnight, it’s a habit at this point to plug it in. That said, at the end of the day of all day usage, I’m anywhere between 45% and 59% battery.

Screen brightness set to zero, auto brightness turned off, true tone disabled, white point lowered and all that.

In fact, after I got my phone and had it all set up, my mother asked to see it. When I gave it to her to play with, she was thoroughly disappointed and started carrying on on how for such an expensive phone, why is the screen so crappy. Why all the fuss over iPhones anyway? It looks like garbage. Her cheap old android had a way better screen. That I should return it and get my money back.

I then remembered to make it more sighted friendly and enabled and turned on/up stuff that I had disabled that didn’t matter to me and handed it back to her. She immediately changed her tune and declared that she wanted one.

Having migrated from an SE, I must admit, I'm not a fan of the new gestures. I enabled the assistive Touch virtual button and configured the actions I wanted in order to make it a more comfortable one handed device and placed it in the dock between the second and third app.

Actually the battery life on the iphone XR is amazing, I can get several days out of it without having to charge, it's also a bit lighter than my iphone 8, and once you get used to not having the home button, it's not a big deal.

Battery
life seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the
way down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my collection.

A little bit like buying a new car and driving it very rarely at low speed for short distances *smile*
I have 2 email accounts set up on my iPhone and to me not using push just makes little sense.
I also have Bluetooth on at all times because I have an Apple Watch, I rarely ever turn Wi-Fi off and I use Location services.
I do turn off background app refresh for most apps since I notice little difference whether that is on or off, but I also don't turn my brightness to 0% since I often want my wife or one of my employees to look at something on my phone or I want to scan a rewards card I have in Apple Wallet and I hate it if each time I have to fiddle with turning up screen brightness or turning off screen curtain.
I have my iPhone so I can use it to it's fullest potential and if that means I have to plug it in every evening then that is no problem to me.

Regards,
Sieghard

I also got an iPhoneXR on Saturday and do not find the gestures problematic. At first I had difficulty getting face-id to work but it seems to be working pretty well now

I also purchased a basic Otterbox case. Does the XR have wireless charging and if so can you use it with the Otterbox case on the iPhone?

looking even better.

Actually the battery life on the iphone XR is amazing, I can get
several days out of it without having to charge, it's also a bit
lighter than my iphone 8, and once you get used to not having the home
button, it's not a big deal.

get good battery life so good luck with your new toy.

Subject: got a new toy!
Battery
life seems really good especially if you turn the brightness all the
way down and turn off the true tone, over all it's a great phone for my collection.
