Discussion:
Synching Audible book on to Apple watch

Hi,

Has anyone managed to successfully sync and Audible book from their
IPHONE across to their APPLE watch?

I am running the latest IOS and watch OS on my IPHONE 6  and watch
series 2.  All I get is a message saying "can't communicate with watch"
which is strange as I can ping the phone from the watch and all my other
Apps communicate across the two devices fine.

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary,

I got a 1.5-hour book onto the watch when it was plugged in overnight. I couldn't transfer a 9-hour book, though. Transferring is slow and likely to fail, so your best bet is to do short books. And nothing will transfer unless the watch is on the charger.

HTH,
Anna

Hi Anna,

Glad its not just me then! I was trying to sync a  15 hour book and the
phone which has an APPLE smart battery pack was right next to the watch
which was on the charger.

I  think I will try some experimentation and see if there is anything on
the forums about this and possibly complain to Audible, not really a
good start for a new watch App.

Thanks

This is a truly miserable experience.
When Audible first introduced the Apple Watch app I was listening to a book called Wolves by D. J. Molles to my watch.
The book is 18 hours and 19 minutes and at first I couldn't figure out why when I opened the Audible app on my watch it kept saying I needed to first transfer a book by syncing it to my watch.
I eventually ignored it and a few days later happened to check and the book was then on my watch, why something like can't transfer over Wi-Fi in minutes I am not sure.
Anyhow, on the watch there then shows the title and there are 4 buttons which just say "Button". By trial and error I figured out that the bottom right button is the sleep timer. The one above on the right as well doesn't seem to do anything until I force press it, then it opens a menu where I can delete the book, I can set speed and a few other things.
On the left are also two buttons one on top of another and unlabelled and I haven't quite figured out what they do. When I double tap on the bottom left I hear a sort of tone and then Voiceover speaks the title and when I double tap again it starts playing, however, none of the 4 buttons seems to stop playback and I had to go into my Now Playing screen where I have labelled buttons for Pause, 30 seconds rewind and 30 seconds skip.
Anyhow, I really don't have time for such nonsense especially since I can't even listen on my Apple Watch speaker. This would be the only use I currently have, I could maybe turn the volume quite low and with my watch near my head I could listen at night without having to use a headset and without disturbing my wife, sort of like a pillow speaker almost. But you can only listen with a Bluetooth headset so I might as well use my iPhone or, even better, when I am at home I can just tell my Echo to play my book since I have my Voyager Edge paired with my Echo speaker as well. Here I can tell it which book and if I am already listening to a book I just say "Alexa, play my book" and it will start where I left off on my iPhone or if I was listening on a different Echo device including my Sonos One speakers.
If Audible wants people to use their Apple Watch app to listen to books they better make this a better experience first.

Regards,
Sieghard

Just out of curiocity I just tried it again with the book Deep Freeze by John Sandford (that fucking Flowers is one of my favourites)!
Sorry, for those who don't know the Virgil Flowers books by John Sandford, that's usually how the agent from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is referred to.
Anyhow, it's a 10 hour 2 minute book, it's been saying "Cancel syncing" for a while when I checked which indicates it should still be syncing.
After maybe 20 minutes it now says:
Paired Apple Watch is not responding
Connect your watch to a charger, make sure airplane mode on Apple Watch is turned off and try connecting your watch and phone again.
So yes, this works great, it's such a smooth experience that it makes we want to immediately delete the Audible app from my Apple Watch and just use my iPhone or Alexa enabled speakers where listening to a book just works.

Well I did some looking around the forums to see what others had to say
on the Audible watch  App.

Everybody has had problems whatever the phone or watch model and the
advice provided by Audible themselves is contradictory. There is a
suggestion to turn off WIFI on the watch as the App uses Bluetooth but
others say turn Bluetooth off on the phone to force it to use WIFI which
is faster.

A second point to come up is that there is a two stage process, which
isn't visible using Voiceover, an authentication stage and the transfer
itself.  If the watch is locked before the transfer stage starts the
process hangs.  But putting it on the charger as recommended locks it.

So all in all it is a pretty dismal start for a new App and thats not to
mention the Voiceover inaccessability issues.

So as others on the forums have said the best course of action is to
delete it off the watch and wait until there is a clear indication in a
future Audible App upgrade that the watch App has been fixed!

I did two more trials, this time both books synced to the watch although it takes long. I never checked exactly how long since I usually put it on the charger and let it be. The book Deep Freeze which is 10 hours and 2 minutes long synced, but I was almost done with that book anyways so when I checked and saw that the book was in the app on my watch I only had 20 minutes or so left, but the watch picked up correctly where I left off and I used my Voyager Edge to finish listening to the book. I then deleted it and synced the book Super Powereds: Year 2 which is over 32 hours long. I had it on the charger since last night and the book is now there. I never turned off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, but it does seem to work better now.
I still wish I could listen via the speaker on my watch and don't see myself using the Audible watch app a lot.

Regards,
Sieghard

I thought audible was making it so you could listen to a book via the
speaker. Wow can't believe they dropped the ball on the accessibility
as well.

Sorry, not sure if I mentioned this, but I am using an iPhone 6S Plus with
the iOS 12.1.1 public beta, whatever the latest Audible update is and I have
a series 2 Apple Watch with WatchOS 5.1.1.

Well I did some looking around the forums to see what others had to say on
the Audible watch  App.
Everybody has had problems whatever the phone or watch model and the advice
provided by Audible themselves is contradictory. There is a suggestion to
turn off WIFI on the watch as the App uses Bluetooth but others say turn
Bluetooth off on the phone to force it to use WIFI which is faster.
A second point to come up is that there is a two stage process, which isn't
visible using Voiceover, an authentication stage and the transfer itself.
If the watch is locked before the transfer stage starts the process hangs.
But putting it on the charger as recommended locks it.
So all in all it is a pretty dismal start for a new App and thats not to
mention the Voiceover inaccessability issues.
So as others on the forums have said the best course of action is to delete
it off the watch and wait until there is a clear indication in a future
Audible App upgrade that the watch App has been fixed!

Just out of curiocity I just tried it again with the book Deep Freeze by
John Sandford (that fucking Flowers is one of my favourites)!
Sorry, for those who don't know the Virgil Flowers books by John Sandford,
that's usually how the agent from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal
Apprehension is referred to.
Anyhow, it's a 10 hour 2 minute book, it's been saying "Cancel syncing"
for a while when I checked which indicates it should still be syncing.
Paired Apple Watch is not responding
Connect your watch to a charger, make sure airplane mode on Apple Watch is
turned off and try connecting your watch and phone again.
So yes, this works great, it's such a smooth experience that it makes we
want to immediately delete the Audible app from my Apple Watch and just
use my iPhone or Alexa enabled speakers where listening to a book just
works.

Hi,
Has anyone managed to successfully sync and Audible book from their
IPHONE across to their APPLE watch?
I am running the latest IOS and watch OS on my IPHONE 6  and watch
series 2.  All I get is a message saying "can't communicate with watch"
which is strange as I can ping the phone from the watch and all my
other Apps communicate across the two devices fine.
Thanks
Gary

I am not necessarily blaming Audible for not being able to listen on speaker since it would appear this is a restriction imposed by Apple. At this point not even music from Apple can play on the speaker, not sure why the restriction, but if that is in fact what it is I blamed Apple not Audible. Not naming the buttons properly is a different story of course.
