Recommendations for word processor apps for IOS

Hi all

So lately, have been seriously considering not purchasing a new Mac device and just make do with my iPhone 8 and the new iPad that came out earlier this year for my computing needs.

Only thing that's stopping me and in which I am hoping that suggestions are most welcome is: recommendations for current word processor apps that are up to date and accessible with voiceover on iOS.

I will also be using FlickType full time as well.

Any thoughts are really appreciated!

Well, if I had to do all my word processing on an iDevice, I would use Voice Dream Writer.
However, it only edits txt files, but you can export as RTF, Word, and others.
But, you cannot edit Word documents, or anything that isn't plain text.
I'd recommend reading up on its features.
I could try to send you the user guide privately if you would like.
Voice Dream Writer is $9.99.
Frankly, if you need to edit word or RTF files, I'd stick with a computer, since none of the apps work that well with VoiceOver that will allow editing of those file types.

I couldn't disagree more. I do all my writing on my iPHONE7 using Ulysses.
For serious writing though, do yourself a huge favour and get an external
Bluetooth keyboard. Flicktype is awesome for when you're on the move but I
can type tons faster with the Microsoft Mobile Keyboard I'm currently
using. I expect to do even better with the Hexgears X1 mechanical keyboard
I backed on Kickstarter. Haven't owned a mechanical keyboard before but I
keep hearing very good things about them. Youtube has lots of detailed
reviews and explanations of various keyboards. There are loads of pretty
good Bluetooth keyboards out there these days.

You pay a monthly or yearly subscription for Ulysses but I find it well
worth the cost. They're always improving the app and doing so thoughtfully.
It uses a markdown language which means you use punctuation symbols as
commands to be acted upon when the file is exported. That means it's all
totally accessible including the formatting commands. There are toolbars
you can use so you don't need to memorise all the punctuation.

You have lots of other choices too including Microsoft Word and Pages. Both
of those are free. The recent VoiceOver update which added the ability to
quickly correct spelling mistakes with the VoiceOver rotor helps a ton.
Also, it's gotten far easier to use the text selection rotor setting to cut
and paste chunks of document around.

Frankly, I think we're at the point where you have loads of writing options
for iOS which are superior to Voice Dream Writer. Another one I plan to
look at soon is called Biword and seems like a nice blog publishing choice
with VoiceOver support. Both Ulysses and Scrivener have VoiceOver support
and they're used by actual working authors. Both are award winning apps and
Scrivener doesn't require a subscription. You pay once and keep using it.
Another strong possibility is an app called Bear. I haven't dug into that
one yet but it too offers VoiceOver support and has gotten favourable
reviews.

Both Pages and Microsoft Word are completely free on iOS. I personally
don't like them but perhaps, you'll favour their approach now that
VoiceOver has improved in text selection and spellchecking.

I know how disheartening it can be when there are so many thousands of
inaccessible apps for every one that does work with VoiceOver. My guide
that I'm working on wil divulge my best discoveries and have advice on app
shopping amnong many other things. I recommend keeping a frequent ear on
the Applevis site at:

As this is where people tend to share their discoveries of accessible apps.
Awareness of blind iOS users is spreading among app developers and I'm
finding that I can take a chance which pays off more often these days. Plus
Apple is quite good about refunding if you get something you can't
ultimately use. The Wordweb dictionary/thesaurus app, the Terminology
dictionary/thesaurus app and the PCalc calculator have all proved to be
quite usable. Things3, a task manager, is accessible but could do with some
work. The Microsoft Todo app is also fully accessible in that app category.
Add in the Google and Wikipedia apps and you have a pretty nice writing
environment.

Best of luck in your quest for a good writing app which suits your needs.
There are numerous choices to check out which have different strengths and
weaknesses.

Voice Dream Writer also uses the text markup. Does Ulysses allow you to edit word or rtf documents?

When you have used Word or Pages with a Keyboard on a document more than a couple pages long and been able to accurately tell where you are in said document, Iâd like to hear about it. The main reason I wouldnât recommend using those apps is the issue of knowing where you are when editing.

Voice Dream Reader is a one time charge.

Iâll take a look at the description of Ulysses in the app store, but from what you have said here, I doubt there will be anything to cause me to pay a subscription fee.

You would import a Word document and then use the markup language to do
your formatting in Ulysses as it would save as a text file. When you were
happy with the document, you would export it to any of a number of formats
including pdf, epub, html, etc.

I use the three-finger single tap when I need to know where I am in a
document. You can split documents into sheets and group sheets together so
that the group is exported as the finished document. That way, you're
moving through smaller segments. I have my guide divided into a group of
sheets with each sheet being a major section. Some of these are now over
30000 words long but I can get around pretty efficiently by searching for
headings of different levels among other techniques. You can get
statistical information on any group or sheet with word count, page count,
and much more. It's a pretty different approach to the whole idea of
producing a document. It won't suit everyone. Before paying for anything,
have you tried the three-fingered tap in Word and Pages to locate yourself?
I'd expect Word to be a likely candidate for a kind of status line that
you're more used to having.

Yes, I've tried all those things with both Word and Pages and no go. BTW, Word is not free for editing, you have to have an Office 365 subscription or I guess buy it.
But, it sounds like Ulysses is very much like Voice Dream Writer but has the advantage of importing a Word document.
But, to each his own. I do my real word processing on a computer so I wouldn't need the Ulysses features myself, but the person who started this thread might be interested.

I couldn't disagree more. I do all my writing on my iPHONE7 using Ulysses. For serious writing though, do yourself a huge favour and get an external Bluetooth keyboard. Flicktype is awesome for when you're on the move but I can type tons faster with the Microsoft Mobile Keyboard I'm currently using. I expect to do even better with the Hexgears X1 mechanical keyboard I backed on Kickstarter. Haven't owned a mechanical keyboard before but I keep hearing very good things about them. Youtube has lots of detailed reviews and explanations of various keyboards. There are loads of pretty good Bluetooth keyboards out there these days.

You pay a monthly or yearly subscription for Ulysses but I find it well worth the cost. They're always improving the app and doing so thoughtfully. It uses a markdown language which means you use punctuation symbols as commands to be acted upon when the file is exported. That means it's all totally accessible including the formatting commands. There are toolbars you can use so you don't need to memorise all the punctuation.

You have lots of other choices too including Microsoft Word and Pages. Both of those are free. The recent VoiceOver update which added the ability to quickly correct spelling mistakes with the VoiceOver rotor helps a ton. Also, it's gotten far easier to use the text selection rotor setting to cut and paste chunks of document around.

Frankly, I think we're at the point where you have loads of writing options for iOS which are superior to Voice Dream Writer. Another one I plan to look at soon is called Biword and seems like a nice blog publishing choice with VoiceOver support. Both Ulysses and Scrivener have VoiceOver support and they're used by actual working authors. Both are award winning apps and Scrivener doesn't require a subscription. You pay once and keep using it. Another strong possibility is an app called Bear. I haven't dug into that one yet but it too offers VoiceOver support and has gotten favourable reviews.

Both Pages and Microsoft Word are completely free on iOS. I personally don't like them but perhaps, you'll favour their approach now that VoiceOver has improved in text selection and spellchecking.

I know how disheartening it can be when there are so many thousands of inaccessible apps for every one that does work with VoiceOver. My guide that I'm working on wil divulge my best discoveries and have advice on app shopping amnong many other things. I recommend keeping a frequent ear on the Applevis site at:

As this is where people tend to share their discoveries of accessible apps. Awareness of blind iOS users is spreading among app developers and I'm finding that I can take a chance which pays off more often these days. Plus Apple is quite good about refunding if you get something you can't ultimately use. The Wordweb dictionary/thesaurus app, the Terminology dictionary/thesaurus app and the PCalc calculator have all proved to be quite usable. Things3, a task manager, is accessible but could do with some work. The Microsoft Todo app is also fully accessible in that app category. Add in the Google and Wikipedia apps and you have a pretty nice writing environment.

Best of luck in your quest for a good writing app which suits your needs. There are numerous choices to check out which have different strengths and weaknesses.

Hi all
So lately, have been seriously considering not purchasing a new Mac device and just make do with my iPhone 8 and the new iPad that came out earlier this year for my computing needs.
Only thing that's stopping me and in which I am hoping that suggestions are most welcome is: recommendations for current word processor apps that are up to date and accessible with voiceover on iOS.
I will also be using FlickType full time as well.
Any thoughts are really appreciated!

If I had to do all my word processing on an iDevice I would go crazy and if I had to use Excel on an iDevice as well I'd probably shoot myself.

Probably not possible at this stage. Non complex documents should be fine, but anything else a computer is still geeded. Personally I use Pages on both iOS and macOS, however I do not deal with complex documents, documents with lots of tables etc etc. Plus you have the issue of editing files that are not in their native formats, however I find Pages does a pretty good job with Word files, both editing and importing/exporting. But again I do not deal with complex documents so your mileage may vary. Those are my £0.02 worth for now.

Hi all
So lately, have been seriously considering not purchasing a new Mac device
and just make do with my iPhone 8 and the new iPad that came out earlier
this year for my computing needs.
Only thing that's stopping me and in which I am hoping that suggestions
are most welcome is: recommendations for current word processor apps that
are up to date and accessible with voiceover on iOS.
I will also be using FlickType full time as well.
Any thoughts are really appreciated!

I have only very recently discovered the voice dream writer app and it does make editing text so much easier than using pages or notes. I have no need to do anything complex like tables or footnotes. But it is great not to have to struggle with garbled text where I cannot locate the cursor: voice dream writer to the rescue!
