please can someone let me know if an update is going on about now. My iPhone 7 has gone completely quiet and I don’t know if anything is happening. It has been like this for a couple of hours. I have plugged it into my pc and restarted both the computer and iPhone but obviously I don’t know what is going on with the iPhone. any suggestions would be useful. Janet

Hi Janet,

It's possible that VoiceOVer volume has gotten turned down. Unlock the phone and flick down with two fingers to get Voiceover to start reading the screen. Then turn up the volume.

Another thing you can do is ask Siri to turn off VoiceOver and then ask Siri to turn it back on.

You might also plug in headphones and see if that works. On phones that have a headphone jack, sometimes dust can get into the jack and prevent the phone from realizing that you have unplugged the headphones, so you can hear Voiceover over headphones but not the speaker. In that case, plugging and unplugging the headphones a few times will probably dislodge the dust.

If those suggestions don't help, I would suggest trying to find someone who can look at your screen.

Best of luck,
Anna

Hi, Janet,

Just letting you know that the same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. I was using my phone and for no rhyme or reason, it just stopped talking. I finally called Apple Accessibility and they helped me get my phone talking again. It was rather scary and I hope this never happens again. They were very patient. I was on the phone for quite some time, but all my apps came back as well as my music. I don’t know if you have ever called them, but they are wonderful.

Their number is (877) 2043930. Good luck!

This has happened to me from time to time on my SE.

I either plug in some headphones or a bluetooth set and get volume back this way.

I think others have had similar experiences. It can be really annoying and frustrating, but the fix is at least semi-straight forward.

As Anna and Cristobal pointed out, this is almost a simple issue of the volume having gone to 0%, waking up your phone and pressing the volume up button multiple times usually fixes this. By multiple times I mean at least 8 or 10 times and in my experience it is not really necessary to be on the home screen and swipe down with two fingers any more. You can definitely check if that is the problem by plugging in a headset because the external speaker volume and headset volume are separate and if you have Voiceover with a headset but not without the headset then it is the volume.
