Mail, Safari (Web browser), TextEdit (similar to Windows' Notepad but
with more features and document types it can process and create),
Calendar, Messages, Contacts (like on the iPhone), GarageBand, to name some.

Obtaining new applications via the App Store is easy and accessible.

If you have never used a Macintosh computer before, I highly
recommend--no, advise--you to get Janet Ingber's books from National
Braille Press, such as http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/MAC-BASICS.html and
http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/MAC-HIGHSIERRA.html

Well, there's no DOS, but there *is* Terminal, which puts you into a
Linux shell, which is way more powerful than DOS ever thought about being.
