Discussion:
Accessible heart rate monitoring with an iPhone?

Hi all,
I know that the Apple Watch can’t enable you to monitor your heart rate during the work out. However, I would like to find a less expensive way that would let me do this Accessibility. I recall hearing that the fit bit app is accessible or wise. And I know there are various models of fit bit. Is this a less expensive but equally accessible alternative? I can’t justify the watch based on some of the other nice uses that it has at this point. But I really would like the heart rate monitoring ability.

You might look at an app called Instant Heart Rate Free. This will let
you take your heart rate when you start the app by putting a finger on
the camera lens. The app was mostly accessible the last time I looked.
All data was then entered in the Health app. Not as good as real-time
monitoring, but it is an option.

I have an old refurbished Fitbit Flex. All it really does is count steps, but I only use it for the vibrating alarm feature
As I'm more of an early bird and the misses is a night owl, this allows me to get up without having to use an audible alarm and avoid incurring her wrath. The device is nothing special, but the app is and since I can remember has been completely accessible.
My wife's got a Fitbit charge that can do a lot more stuff. Including monitoring heart rate in real time. I believe you can select modes like walking/running, exercise, Activity X, Y or Z. If I remember correctly, all devices use the same app. You just have to select which one you wish to pair. Other than the Fitbit line and Apple Watch, I'm not really aware of anything else that can monitor in real time and in an accessible manner heart rate other than more bulky chest strap devices maybe if you want to go that rout I suppose.
My treadmill came with a heart rate monitor, but I really haven't played with it much. It syncs with the Nautilus app and can be imported into the health app. I have no idea how accurate it is though.
I think she got her Fitbit charge last year or when it came out. We redeemed some BestBuy points and basically got it for free. I think at that time, it was around $150. You could always give it a try buying it from a store with a generous return policy to see if it fits your needs.

I have this app, but it only gives you a one time measure. Not suitable for
continuous monitoring.
