I’ve been using aftershokz for years and love them. I don’t turn them up real high and am able to hear my environment fine and understand the messages my gps is giving me.

Subject: Question for anyone using bone conduction ear phones

I am thinking of asking for Aftershokz headphones for Christmas. Here’s my question. The reason I want bone conduction head phones is that I am often walking along noisy streets where it is hard to hear my phone without turning up the volume to the point that it hurts my ear. I tend to wear one ear bud at a time so that I can use my other ear for hearing my environment. I think the main reason most people want bone conduction is to hear without blocking out environmental noise, but do they work well enough that you can hear by a noisy road? Do we still run the risk of hurting our precious hearing when turning up the volume with bone conduction?

Thanks. Robin

I’ve got a 7 and three eights noggin. I guess I’m used to the Trekz Air by now and over all find the fit to be ok if not comfortable. A few weeks ago, I had to wear an old Trekz Titanium set that I still had and man, did those things feel tight.

I know Aftershokz came out with a smaller version to better serve smaller headed folks per say. You should reach out to them to give them your feedback. I live with the Air fine, but wouldn’t mind a little more give either.

I guess they’re just not for everyone then. I suppose it would be good if they could come out with something that’s adjustable, but who knows if that’s possible. I’ve bugged them for a telecommunications option. I.E. something with a boom mic that you can use at the computer and while they’ve acknowledged my feedback, who knows what kind of R&D process/budget they’ve got.

I know there are other bone conduction options out there, but aside from Aftershokz kind of being the gold standard right now, I think they all more or less work off of a similar design

I've given them my feedback each time I returned the headsets for a refund.

Thanks for this input. I think I will try them. I am mainly listening to audio books or reading articles while walking, so I want the sound quality to be good enough to understand. I am not listening to music or something where I am going for the beautiful stereo sounds quality.

I agree with what has been said here. I have also used Afgtershokz for many years, my current model is theTitanium version, and I absolutely love them. They are handy for listening to audio books around the house while keeping track of conversation or other activity around me, for listening to GPS directions as I walk, or for listening to music at the gym. Even while working out, I don’t like to tune out my surroundings completely. And for what it’s worth, I have never had any complaints at all about my audio through the microphone while talking on the phone. Obviously, there are headsets out there that will have much better sound quality all the way around, but when it comes to bone conduction, I think the Aftershokz are fantastic.

Thanks. Robin

I whole-heartedly agree with Cristóbal’s reply. I would like to add that, due to a chronic infection in my right ear as a youngster, I only have decent hearing in my left ear. I lost the mechanics in my right ear but the nerves are fine; these bone-conduction ear-phones deliver full and complete sound to both ears because those mechanics are not in play. I personally think they are teriffic and would recommend them — basically for listening. Because, as Cristóbal has stated, the output quality is “passable” and not much more than that.

Bone conduction is a solid option for getting out and about.

That said, like anything, if you have the volume really high, it’ll still drown out noise in general. If you’re in a loud environment where you may need to raise the sound on your headphones, this is something to keep in mind.

Generally though, they lend themselves well for navigational app usage. Getting audible feedback in stereo is going to be easier to hear than with just one headphone and you don’t’ have to worry about blasting out your eardrums

Microphone quality for making calls is passable, but I wouldn’t advise on making it one’s default choice for conversations. I have my Plantronics 5200 for this.

When I’m on my treadmill, I blast my Trekz Air and drown out the rest of the world, but again, I’m not trying to cross streets or listen for oncoming traffic either.

This reply is specifically intended for Richard, but I imagine there are others on the list that will benefit from this message.

When you ordered your Aftershokz didn’t you find the sizing option? I had the exact problem when I ordered my first set, far too tight. I have a 7 5/8 noggin and that first set darn near stroked my brain. The last tAftershokz I ordered however were the larger size and they fit fine, comfortable I dare say!

I'm not sure which model you received, but they now have the Treks Air,
the Treks Titanium and the Treks Titanium Mini. As Bill says, they have
a sizing guide on their web site. I just went looking the other day

When you ordered your Aftershokz didn’t you find the sizing option? I
had the exact problem when I ordered my first set, far too tight.  I
have a 7 5/8 noggin and that first set darn near stroked my brain.
The last tAftershokz I ordered however were the larger size and they
fit fine, comfortable I dare say!

Has anyone found Bone Conduction headphones that are any good that
are not Aftershokz?  I’ve tried them and they are too small for my
head.  It is like having a vice clamped on my head.  I can’t wear
them for more than 5 minutes without a severe headache.

Hi Christopher,

I purchased a Trekz Air headset from, http://www.atguys.com/store/,
and I didn't see / notice any sizing charts. What website are you referring
to please? Mine do fit just fine but, for future reference...Thanks much.
Take care. Go Rams!
Sent from my iBarstool.
I type out everything I want to remember. That way instead of spending a lot
of time trying to remember what it was, I spend the time looking for where I
saved it!

I'm not sure which model you received, but they now have the Treks Air, the
Treks Titanium and the Treks Titanium Mini. As Bill says, they have a sizing
guide on their web site. I just went looking the other day because my Bluez
just died, and I'm looking for a replacement.

I don’t’ think the Trekz Air are that old. I got my Trekz Air around January of last year and at that time, I think they were still relatively new. Maybe two or three months. If you had the wide plasticky band ones, those were the bluez II. They sucked.

The ones after were the Trekz Titanium. They were a totally different design. Much over all smaller footprint and the wrap around band that goes behind the head was way thinner. These were the ones I had to wear for a bit after using my Airs for a while and while I thought they were ok before I got my Trekz Air, I realized quickly how tight and uncomfortable they felt.

The Trekz Air which is the current design is more or less the same design as the Titanium, but a slightly thinner and longer band and more give for bigger heads. Also, the hooks for the bone conduction part of the headset sit lower and not as high up against the head making for a more comfortable feel.

I can wear my Trekz Air all day and be comfortable. It’s not like I forget they’re there, but they’re no where nearly as a tight or awkward a fit as the Bluez II or Titanium.

There’s always Amazon if you’re concerned about having to return them. Pretty straight forward process and you get the thirty days.

Now I was curious. Looks like this is another option of bone conduction on Amazon that has good reviews.

Bone Conduction Headphones Bluetooth 5.0 Open-Ear Wireless Sports Headsets w/ Mic for Jogging Running Driving Cycling, Sweatproof and Lightweight-1.2

https://www.amazon.com/Conduction-Headphones-Bluetooth-Sweatproof-Lightweight-1-2/dp/B07GNB4ZZS/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1544496268&sr=8-7&keywords=bone+conduction+headset

It’s only 50 bucks

The only problem I have had with the Aftershokz headset is that after a time one of the ear pieces will begin to separate from the frame and eventually disconnect. This has happened with every set I've had, even the Trekz Titanium. The company is always great about replacing them for free, but often I have to wait several weeks. I currently have the Trekz Air, and when they break I will not replace them with an Aftershokz product.
