Same here but I listened to a podcast from the Blind side and mosen says not to move your head too slowly and that you will get slightly better results if going faster. I tried that on the alternate Id and (fingers crossed) it seems to be more consistent.

Face ID has been finicky for me so far. Iâll probably try to redo the face scanning thing after I shut things down for today. That said, when it works, lighting has no baring. Iâve even made squishy faces on purpose. Iâve yawned while unlocking my phone. Continued to talk when unlocking and when it works, none of these actions impede it from working. My experience so far is that in general itâs simply not consistent. Again though, it could just be a bad initial scan.

Yes I know what you say about the security is correct and I will try to reset the face ID so perhaps I get a better result. It just seems like when there is plenty of light, it works well but when I am in my office, especially in the evening, it is very unreliable. I did go in this morning and put in what they call an alternate face ID and will check it out today. Maybe this will solve the Id issue. If I can get that to work better, it will be a nice relief. I suspect part of my impatience is due to the added new gesture for the home button and learning which to do first. LOL!
but you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Hi Marie,
You are mistaken about Face Id requiring good lighting, in fact, it works in total darkness.
Also, if you are asking about whether a passcode or Face Id or Touch Id are required to unlock your phone each time then the answer is yes if you have enabled passcode/Touch Id or passcode/Face Id. It would hardly be a security feature if you could set it so it would only ask you once an hour or something like that.
The reason for Touch Id on the older phones and Face Id on the new ones is so you don't have to enter a passcode each time and to make it easier to unlock your phone.
Yes, you can turn the feature off completely, but this also prevents you from using Apple Pay, it means that you can't use Touch Id or Face Id to authenticate app store purchases so you will have to enter your Apple Id password instead of just putting your finger on the home button or looking at the phone.
Furthermore, if your phone is ever stolen or lost anybody can access your information on the phone and, what is more, there is no barrier to a thief to simply wipe the phone and sell it or use it him or herself. At least with a passcode along with either Touch Id or Face Id this is not possible.

It seems to recognize the fingerprint fairly consistently but even so, the constant need to use the finger print or the passcode is too demanding. I no longer ever take the 6S out of the house so I have turned the passcode off on that phone. But I recently got an IPhone X and if not in decent light, the face ID does not work and it seems that it requires a code or ID every time the screen locks and this is ridiculous. If no one has any ideas, I will call accessibility tomorrow and see what they might suggest.

Hello Marie,
I have not noticed that my phone asks me for a passcode more than before. Is it maybe that your fingerprint is not recognized?

In the past, as I remember it, you only needed to enter the passcode when powering up or after around 40 minutes of inactivity. Now it seems I have to enter the darn thing constantly. Is there any setting that will reduce the need to enter the code so often? In the passcode setting there is a section about when it is required and the one and only option is âimmediatelyâ. why is that the only selection and is there any way to change it?
Please help me with this before I lose my mind totally. LOL
Thanks,
Marie
